Registration for virtual exchanges with students from the USA and Honduras are open

Opportunity for undergraduate and graduate UEM students accepts applications until March 20th

Undergraduate and graduate students at the State University of Maringá (UEM) have until March 20th to apply for a virtual exchange opportunity held jointly with institutions from Honduras and the United States (USA). Registration is free and must be done online via this link.

Proficiency in English , which will be the lingua franca of the interactions, is the only prerequisite for participation. Students from all four universities organizing the event - UEM, Universidad de Honduras, the University of Florida in the USA, and Penn State University, also in the USA - can apply. The presence of academics from Spain, Mexico, Algeria and Chile, among other countries, is also confirmed.

The virtual exchange will focus on global citizenship actions through interdisciplinary discussions on the United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Developments Goals (SDG). The synchronous and asynchronous activities will take place between March 25th and April 16th, with a total workload of 8 hours and a certificate of participation.

The first synchronous meeting is scheduled for April 2nd, starting at 2 pm, with the participation of guest speaker Benameur Nehar, a professor at the University of Tlemcen in Algeria. On April 16th, a second synchronous meeting will promote discussion and reflection among the students. Mediation will be carried out by professors from the four organizing universities.

On UEM’s part, the organization and mediation of the interactions will be the responsibility of Luciana Cabrini Simões Calvo, a professor from the Department of Modern Languages (DLM - Departamento de Letras Modernas), who is responsible for the Internationalization at Home (IeC - Internacionalização em Casa) division of the institution’s International Cooperation Office (ECI - Escritório de Cooperação Internacional).

According to the professor, the action represents a great opportunity for academics. “It’s a virtual exchange initiative to boost IeC actions. UEM students will have the opportunity to interact and develop joint activities, focusing on SDG, with other students from different international universities. They will be able to debate and reflect on very important aspects for a more sustainable society”, she explained.
