QS World University Ranking Latin America & The Caribbean 2025 was published on Thursday (3); check it out
The State University of Maringá (UEM-Universidade Estadual de Maringá) is the best state university in Paraná for the second year in a row. This is according to the QS World University Ranking: Latin America & The Caribbean 2025, organized by the British consultancy Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) and published on Thursday (3).
Just like last year, UEM is the first among the five State Higher Education Institutions in Paraná that were ranked. Among all 10 public and private universities in Paraná analyzed by the organizers, UEM is in third place, behind only the Federal University of Paraná (Universidade Federal do Paraná - UFPR) and the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná (Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná - PUCPR).
Nationally, UEM was considered the 27th among 96 Brazilian Higher Education Institutions analyzed. Among the 320 South American institutions ranked, the University came 82nd.
The rector, Leandro Vanalli, recalled that UEM's ranking reflects the collaborative work between management and the academic community. “We are delighted to hear that UEM is doing very well at the state, national and international level in the ranking that assesses the influence of institutions on society, scientific production and student training. This is the result of investments made by the State Government and the General Superintendence of Science, Technology and Higher Education (Secretaria da Ciência, Tecnologia e Ensino Superior - SETI), and above all, the quality of our staff and students who, together, always strive for excellence. Congratulations to UEM and the Paraná’s Higher Education System,” he said.
The publication on Thursday (3) also showed the evolution of UEM's overall score. This year, the University received an average score of 44.4 points, five more than the 39.3 obtained last year.
The growth is due to the progress made by UEM in different areas. In six of the eight areas assessed by the ranking, the university improved on the previous year. The biggest improvements were in “citations per article” and “online impact”, which assess, respectively, the average number of citations to academic articles produced at the institution and the university's visibility in digital media.
In this context, the Associate Provost for Institutional Planning and Development (Planejamento e Desenvolvimento Institucional - PLD) at UEM, Maurício Reinert do Nascimento, pointed out that the University is an international leader in different sectors. “We are 28th in impact on social networks, 42nd in academic articles per professor, 69th in citations per academic article and 79th in internationalization of research, among more than 400 universities analyzed. This is one of the main international rankings we have, and we are already a standout not only in Brazil, but throughout Latin America,” he celebrated.
The QS World University Ranking: Latin America & The Caribbean 2025 analyzed a total of 437 Higher Education Institutions from 24 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Among all the universities considered, UEM was ranked 101st and, as has been the case since 2020, is among the top 25% of universities - UEM's participation in the ranking began in 2019.
