UEM welcomes new international students at reception event

In 2025, 47 students from other countries will study either part of their undergraduate program or their full degree at the university

On 17 April, the International Cooperation Office (Escritório de Cooperação Internacional - ECI) of the State University of Maringá (Universidade Estadual de Maringá - UEM) prepared a special reception for the 47 international students who are arriving for the 2025 academic year at the institution. The event took place in the Auditorium of the Superior Councils and brought together members from various sectors of the academic and external community.

This year, the university is welcoming 35 new undergraduate students through the Undergraduate StudentExchange Program (PEC-G) and the Portuguese as a Foreign Language Program (PEC-PLE). In addition, it is welcoming 12 students who were admitted under the call for refugees and migrants.

At the head table, the following authorities participated in the reception: the rector, Leandro Vanalli; the vice-rector, Gisele Mendes; the director of International Cooperation of UEM, Márcio Cassandre; the representative of the Migrations Project (Projeto Migrações), Mayckel da Silva Barreto; the chief of staff for the Articulation of Inclusion Policies of the Office of Teaching Affairs, Isabel Cristina Rodrigues and the representative of the Secretariat of Youth, Citizenship and Migrants, Fernando Vanalli.

For UEM’s Rector, Leandro Vanalli, welcoming the students is a way of showing that the university has its doors open to everyone. “We want you to feel welcomed and to make the most of our teaching, research and outreach programs, sharing experiences and getting to know our culture. You are very welcome, and you can count on us.”

Vice-Rector Gisele Mendes de Carvalho also highlighted UEM's international partnerships and invited the students to explore the university’s campuses and the cities in the region.

UEM’s Director of International Cooperation, Márcio Cassandre,emphasizes that "the reception for international students is not merely an event marking their arrival, but also a recognition of the collective work of many people who make this welcome possible and transform UEM into a place of dreams and opportunities."

International community

UEM has an international community of approximately 300 students from around 25 countries, including Afghanistan, France, Cape Verde, Angola, Paraguay, Jamaica, Nigeria, Spain, Cuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Gabon, Benin, Chile, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Honduras, Colombia, Costa Rica, Senegal, Argentina, Portugal, Poland, Ukraine, Peru, Syria and Mozambique.

The International Cooperation Office (ECI) is the body of the State University of Maringá dedicated to international affairs. It is responsible for international agreements and projects; for the internationalization of UEM and for student and faculty mobility.

ATTENDEES - Also present at the event were the Head of the Rector's Office, Maria Luísa Furlan; the Federal Police Officer, Gilvanês Bakai; the Federal Police Chief, Alex Sandro Biegas; the representative of the Abuna Institute, Isabel Christina Prado Gomes; the coordinator of Portuguese as an Additional Language (PLA), Neiva Jung and UEM’s refugee student in the Distance Learning Portuguese-English Linguistics and Literature program and Cáritas in Maringá representative, Rima Alzarzouri.
