Academic cooperation strengthens Italy–Brazil ties

UEM and the University of Calabria strengthen academic cooperation through exchanges and a double degree in Economics

The collaboration between the University of Calabria (Italy) and the State University of Maringá (Brazil) has been successfully ongoing since 2019. Starting with the visit of the economist Prof. Joilson Giorno to the University of Calabria (Unical), the partnership led to international cooperation agreements, including a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and an Erasmus+ inter-institutional agreement.

Over the years, the cooperation continued through several exchange visits and, in 2024, developed into a joint collaboration funded under the European PNRR TNE GPS Education Project (CUP D74G23000280006). As part of the project, student and academic staff exchanges were launched, involving around 20 Brazilian and Italian students and 10 professors from the Department of Economics at UEM and the Department of Economics, Statistics and Finance (DESF) at Unical. One of the main outcomes of PNRR TNE GPS Education and Erasmus+ projects was the signing of a double degree agreement in Economics between the two universities.

This fruitful collaboration is expected to continue and expand through additional international academic exchange programs. The partnership represents an important opportunity for students and academic staff in Maringá, enabling them to reconnect with their Italian heritage while opening new paths for academic, entrepreneurial, and cultural cooperation. Moreover, it has the potential to create valuable opportunities for growth, strengthen ties, and inspire new joint initiatives benefiting both communities.
