The Research Center for Limnology, Ichthyology, and Aquaculture (Núcleo de Pesquisas em Limnologia, Ictiologia e Aquicultura - Nupélia) at the State University of Maringá (Universidade Estadual de Maringá – UEM) is the second biggest in Latin America regarding aquatic environments and the biggest when it comes to continental waters. It has developed, since 1983, multiple research projects alongside companies in the energy sector in reservoirs from multiple Brazilian states and natural environments, like the Alto Paraná River floodplain, in the town of Porto Rico (Paraná), where the Nupélia Advanced Research Base is located. Nupélia partners with around 20 countries and promotes science exchanges with multiple institutions and national and international organs as well. Thus, it connects researchers from different scientific areas of continental aquatic environments.
Nupélia has various labs of multiple specialties, aquaculture research stations and its own library. It also presents a relevant contribution through its biological collection which features fishes and sweetwater ichthyoplankton, as well as an herbarium comprised of riparian forest plants. UEM’s Continental Aquatic Environments Ecology Graduate Program (Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ecologia de Ambientes Aquáticos Continentais – PEA), along with infrastructure, logistic support, and Nupélia researchers, is highly graded by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior – CAPES) and receives students from various Brazilian states and other countries. The results of its research have produced many relevant scientific papers.
