Master’s Program and Doctoral Program
Founded in 1997 along with the Master's Degree in Physics program, later forming the associated Doctoral in Physics program (2000-2008) and, since 2008, being an independent program with Master's and Doctoral degrees, the Physics Graduate Program (PFI) in the State University of Maringá (Universidade Estadual de Maringá - UEM) has 17 permanent members in the teaching staff, besides 3 adjunct professors. Since its initial formation, PFI has graduated over 200 masters and 100 doctors in Physics, with a solid background in scientific and/or technological research. This is proven by the fact that most of these graduates act in Higher Education Institutions, and many participate in graduate programs. Currently, PFI is organized in 7 research groups, 5 of which focus mainly on experimental research, and other 2 groups which are aimed at the theoretical aspects (even though they highlight the applied research). Among the experimental groups, the focus is on research about the synthesis and characterization of special materials, tissues, and other biological systems, besides investigating the effects of light interaction with the matter. On the other hand, the theoretical groups focus more in elastic theory, liquid crystals, anomalous diffusion, and in the application of statistical physical methods in the study of complex systems. PFI is evaluated with score 5 by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES) and has scholarships available from CAPES, the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq) and Araucária Foundation (Fundação Araucária).
